New EEF guidance on Literacy in Key Stage 2
The Education Edowment Foundation (EEF) have published their updated guidance on ‘Improving Literacy in Key Stage 2’. The guidance offers seven practical, evidence-based recommendations that are relevant to all pupils. This updated edition includes additional examples, explanations and resources to support schools to put the recommendations into practice to develop effective literacy teaching. Although it is aimed at Key Stage 2, it may also be useful for older pupils who need additional support in their literacy.
The seven recommendations are:
- Develop pupils’ language capabilities
- Support pupils to develop fluent reading capabilities
- Teach reading comprehension strategies through modelling and supported practice
- Teach writing composition strategies through modelling and supported practice
- Develop pupils’ transcription and sentence construction skills through extensive practice
- Target teaching and support by accurately assessing pupil needs
Literacy is such a key component of life skills and part of the Preparation for Adulthood that runs through the SEND Code of practice. As always, taking into account pupil’s strengths, identifying needs and removing barriers to literacy by using a variety of means including alternative and augmented communication tools are recommended to support young people with SEND to communicate in the best way possible for them. Having multiple means of representation and action and expression will be vital for some, but valuable for all.
