nasen Award winners write insightful articles

Two of the winners from the nasen Awards 2021 have written articles of their experiences within the sector.

Whitefield Primary School were the winners of the nasen Award for Primary Provision of the Year.

Their headteacher, Jill Wright’s article ‘Making Inclusion Count Against Persistent Disadvantage’ highlights her experience of inclusion for SEND within a socially disadvantaged area. The school based in Liverpool was recognised in the 2021 nasen Awards in October for its focus on high-quality inclusive practice, with the aim of integrating all children in all learning opportunities. The school is located in an area of social and economic need, and its percentage of pupils with SEN Support is well above the national average.

Henley Bank High School based in Gloucestershire has also had an article published, the schools SENCO, Rhian Williams. In her discussion, Rhian explores ‘The Power of Parental Engagement’. She points out the importance of communication and co-production with parents in order to achieve inclusion within the SEND community.

The school won the nasen Award for Secondary Provision of the Year, recognised for the supportive relationships it has formed between staff, student with SEND and their families, and for striving to involve 100% of parents/carers in the education of their children.
