International Day of People with Disabilities 3rd December 2021
The theme for IDPWD 2021 is ‘Fighting for rights in the post-Covid era’ and has been planned to celebrate the challenges, barriers and opportunities for people who live with disabilities in the context of a global pandemic. The day is being used to recognise that people that live with disabilities are among the most affected by the pandemic and where their access to the health and rehabilitation services were reduced, social isolation increased and a lack of emergency preparedness for people with additional needs. They continue to fight for the fundamental goal of ‘Nothing about us without us’ and that policymakers listen to lived experience to inform decisions.
One of the organisations fighting for their rights to be heard are Communication First who have produced a short video entitled ‘Learn from Us’ highlighting the ways that non-speaking autistic people can be heard.
