Students with visual impairment called to have their say on new national standards

Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT) with the Department for Education (DfE) are holding an event to hear from young people with lived experience of visual impairment (VI) about their experiences of moving into post 16 education and what needs to be improved. TPT are working with DfE to support the development of new national standards for transitions. Through this work they are aiming to raise the voice of blind and partially sighted young people to inform and shape SEND policy. This event provides an opportunity for blind and partially sighted young people to have their voices heard. The event will be held online on 18th April 2023 between 5pm and 6pm.

In response to the SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement plan the Government is aiming to ensure that every area in the country works in the same way by introducing new National Standards for SEND and Alternative Provision. The standards will explain what support should be available, who should provide it and who should pay for it.

The National Standard for Transitions will provide guidance which supports children and young people to successfully move through education and into adulthood, regardless of whether they have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), through the wide variety of routes available. This will initially focus on into and out of post-16 transitions. The questions to be discussed are:

  • How was the transition from secondary school to college?
  • What information and advice were given about this move?
  • Do you know about the various routes into further education such as vocational courses and supported internships?
  • What changes would you recommend improving the experience for other blind and partially sighted young people?
