New toolkit to support leaders reviewing workload

DfE

A new toolkit produced by the Department for Education, in collaboration with teaching and headteacher unions, has been published to support senior leadership teams to review workload across all aspects of school.

Some of the resources explain how schools have developed and maintained a culture of openness and trust which has removed traditional monitoring approaches such as classroom observations. The resources are presented ready to use with staff, perhaps as a basis for a training session, while the example policies are adaptable for your own context.

There are nine toolkits covering:

  1. Identify workload issues in your school
  2. Wellbeing and workload
  3. Data management
  4. Feedback and marking
  5. Curriculum planning and resources
  6. Behaviour management
  7. Communications
  8. Plan your yearly calendar
  9. Support for governing boards and trustees

Workload has been one of the major reasons stated by staff leaving the profession and one that is in the control of the school. It is recommended by the DfE that evaluating workload is part of the yearly cycle of review.
