Helping learners shape their experience through “The Big Future” survey

The Children’s Commissioner for England has designed “The Big Future” survey to give children and young people the opportunity to influence conversations about education, wellbeing, communities and the future, ensuring that their voices are heard by decision-makers. Education settings have a vital role to play in supporting participation. The survey is designed to be accessible, takes around five minutes to complete, and is open to all children and young people aged 0–18, with adults able to support completion where needed.

To help schools engage learners meaningfully, the Children’s Commissioner has produced free lesson plans for both primary and secondary settings. These resources encourage discussion about children’s experiences, local communities and hopes for the future before pupils complete the survey independently. The materials work particularly well within personal development, citizenship, democracy-focused lessons, tutor time or school council activities.  

When introducing the survey, practitioners should emphasise that there are no right or wrong answers, participation is voluntary, and responses are anonymous. Creating a safe, inclusive environment can help learners feel confident sharing their genuine views. By taking part, learners can contribute directly to a national picture of childhood and help shape future policy and practice.
