National Braille Week 10th-16th October

Next week is National Braille Week and provides a wonderful opportunity to engage pupils with a unique writing system they may never have experienced before and raise their awareness of diversity. Braille was invented by Louis Braille at the age of 15 after he was blinded in a childhood accident. In 2015, the UK introduced a modified version of Unified English Braille (UEB) to help bring consistency to those using English-language material throughout the world.

Twinkl have a great set of free resources for introducing pupils to Braille and an assembly script and powerpoint to raise the awareness across the whole school. Using these worksheets with raised stickers gives pupils an insight into the system and its challenges. If you are able there may even be a chance to invest in some Lego Braille bricks or to try using an iPad to engage with Braille to allow pupils to continue their learning.
