New support programme for learners with VI for transition from secondary or FE
Thomas Pocklington Trust have announced their new transitions programme, Supporting Transitions Enriching Progress (STEP). The programme is to support blind and partially sighted students, and is designed to help young people navigate the challenges of their next educational transition with confidence.
The programme is tailored for students in secondary school and college or sixth form, addressing the unique obstacles they may face. This year, STEP focuses on socialising, under the theme #SocialEyes, offering a series of engaging online sessions on key topics:
- Building Connections: Skills for forming meaningful relationships, initiating conversations, and participating in group activities
- Self-Advocacy and Social Confidence: Strategies to advocate for oneself in social situations and build resilience
- Assistive Technology, Social Media, and Online Spaces: Insights into assistive tools when navigating social situations, alongside live demonstrations
One of the main aims of the programme is to offer a safe, supportive, and interactive community where blind and partially sighted students can develop essential social skills, build their confidence and feel prepared for their next step in education.
In autumn, as part of the programme, students will also have the chance to attend an in-person ‘Coming Together’ event after transitioning into their new educational setting. This event will offer opportunities to celebrate achievements, reflect on progress and further build on the skills developed throughout the programme.
