New webinars aimed at building confidence and competence for school workforce in supporting Visual Impairments

The National Sensory Impairment Partnership (NatSIP) and its partner VI organisations delivered a series of webinars as part of their new programme: Building VI Confidence and Competence in the Schools Workforce. The programme aims to provide a series of modules offering an initial introduction to the key elements of awareness, knowledge and skills for education practitioners in the classroom to support the needs of children with VI. The training will cover skills and knowledge needed by those in the front-line school workforce, before the intervention of more specialist teaching and support.

This is timely after a report published by the Guide Dogs organisation entitled Children and young people with vision impairment: The case for transforming support and services in England, identified that:
‘despite improvements in some areas of service delivery, there are too many areas where life is much more challenging for people with a vision impairment than for people without such an impairment.’

The first two webinars covered:

  • Assistive Technology Assessments: How are QTVIs deciding what assistive technology is suitable for individuals with VI?
  • How are VI pupils using iPads?

The sessions were delivered live at the end of November 2021 but the recordings will be available through the NatSIP and VIEW websites in December 2021 for all those who were unable to attend live.
