Supporting students in special and alternative provision (AP) schools to develop safe, healthy eating behaviours is a growing challenge for educators. Schools must balance diverse dietary and feeding needs with national food standards and programmes, often under pressure from limited resources, staffing, and facilities. Busy, noisy food environments can be especially difficult for students with sensory sensitivities, and while schools strive to make lunchtimes social and inclusive, students often want more say in what they eat and how food is served.

This webinar shares findings from a research study on food provision and culture in special and AP schools, featuring insights from students, staff, and parents. We’ll explore the barriers to delivering inclusive food provision and education and positive eating experiences, and invite attendees to reflect on practical actions that could better support students in their own settings.

Meet your trainer - Dr Marie Murphy

Dr Marie Murphy is an Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Nutrition in the Department of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on improving nutrition and reducing dietary inequalities among children and young people, with a particular emphasis on inclusive public health interventions. She currently leads the FEAST project, which explores food provision and eating environments in special and alternative provision schools to support safe and healthy eating behaviours.
