The last two years have presented unique challenges in education but could also offer an opportunity to change the way we assess, measure and support pupils. Claire Pressdee outlines some of the recent research that may help us to make positive changes to the way we support young people with SEND.

Tracking and monitoring pupil progress has always included bridging gaps in learning, but the Covid-19 pandemic has made this task extremely difficult. Unsurprising, considering the last 24 months have arguably been the hardest that any of us working in education have experienced.

The difficulty is providing a fair assessment under the backdrop of lost learning and an uneven profile of what pupils mayor may not have learnt and lived through. This is especially true considering the statistics on attendance during the Covid-19 pandemic.
