Call for evidence: Curriculum and Assessment Review

Do you think the current curriculum and assessment system in our schools and colleges enables learners with SEND to experience success? Do you think there are improvements that could be made to ensure learners with SEND are able to access a curriculum that allows them to thrive in their education and prepares them adequately for adulthood?
What changes could be made to our assessment system to enable learners with SEND to demonstrate their strengths and feel a sense of achievement throughout their education journey?
The DfE are reviewing the existing national curriculum and statutory assessment system in England to ensure they are fit for purpose and meeting the needs of children and young people. At nasen, we want to ensure this includes what works for learners with SEND. As valued members of nasen, your views are crucial in this important call for evidence. We want to ensure that the curriculum is ambitious, relevant and flexible enough to meet the needs of all children and young people – especially those with SEND. We believe an inclusive curriculum and assessment system should place the needs of children with SEND at its heart. Therefore, it’s vital to have our voice heard through this Call for Evidence. And we want you to be part of this.
We are holding two online sessions to allow members to share their experiences and evidence of what works best for learners with SEND. One session will be aimed specifically at SENCOs / Inclusion Leads (or those in similar roles) while the other session will be for general nasen members, including parents / carers.
Following the session, we will use your comments and experiences to formulate nasen’s response to submit to the Department for Education. This will also be published on our website so that you can see how your views have been captured.
