Artificial Intelligence guidance for schools updated

The materials centre on a structured set of training modules covering key aspects of AI in education. These include understanding AI, interacting with generative tools, ensuring safe use, and exploring practical classroom applications.

A key message from the update is that safety remains non-negotiable. Module 3, which focuses on safe use, is highlighted as essential for all users regardless of experience level, underlining concerns around data protection, accuracy, and appropriate use by pupils and staff.

The resources have been developed in partnership with the Chiltern Learning Trust and the Chartered College of Teaching and are designed to be flexible. Schools can use them individually or in groups, adapt them for different levels of expertise, and integrate them into ongoing professional development.

To support practical implementation, the package includes:

  • Activity-based slide decks and video presentations
  • Summaries and quizzes to consolidate learning
  • Templates to support reflection and planning
  • Case studies showing real-world use of AI in schools

Additional materials from the Chartered College include webinars, an online journal, and an optional certification assessment linked to the training.

For leadership teams, dedicated guidance is also available, focusing on strategic oversight and whole-school implementation of AI tools.

The DfE’s approach reflects a growing recognition that AI will play a significant role in education but must be introduced with clear safeguards and informed staff. The emphasis on structured training and evidence-informed practice suggests a move away from ad hoc adoption towards a more consistent, system-wide approach.

As schools prepare for the 2026–27 academic year, the updated materials offer a practical starting point for embedding AI in ways that enhance teaching while protecting both staff and pupils.
