New figures show decline in teacher training entrants
The government has released its figures on the new entrants to the teaching profession for 2022 showing they have reached only 71% of the target recruitment. There are just under 30,000 new entrants this year compared to over 36,000 last year and the high of over 40,000 during the pandemic. If you consider that only 87% of the 2020-21 cohort achieved QTS and of them only 73% went on to teach in state-funded schools, using these figures and applying them to this cohort, means that there could be just 18,500 new teachers available in September this year.
