New UK Alliance Launches to Champion Inclusive Literacy

A new national collaboration, the Alliance for Inclusive Literacy, has launched to ensure that everyone has access to meaningful, progressive literacy education — including access to text and print and active participation in the development of reading and writing skills.

The Alliance brings together organisations, professionals, and advocates committed to improving access to age-appropriate literacy instruction for children and young people who experience barriers to reading and writing, including those who are non-speaking or physically disabled. It is rooted in the shared belief that all learners can and should be taught literacy through inclusive approaches that enable progress.

While inclusion is increasingly discussed, many learners — particularly those with complex communication needs — continue to face low expectations and limited access to high-quality literacy teaching. The Alliance aims to address this by uniting voices to raise expectations, transform practice, and influence policy so that literacy is recognised as a right for all learners.

The Alliance will work collectively to strengthen the national voice for inclusive literacy and increase impact on policy, practice, and public understanding across the UK.

The Alliance will be chaired by the Director of Teach Us Too as its founding Chair and supported by a Steering Group drawn from member organisations.

Membership is open to organisations and individuals committed to advancing inclusive literacy across the UK.
