Call out for education settings to be involved in study on Intensive Interaction for students with PMLD
INTERACT is investigating intensive interaction as a support for communication skills in children and young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). They are testing through undertaking a cluster randomised controlled trial whether a structured programme of Intensive Interaction provided within educational stings and at home is a clinically effective and cost-effective way of improving communication skills. They are recruiting settings that fulfil the criteria:
- SEND/mainstream with SEND units in Great Britain
- Have at least 5 children/young people aged 3-25 with PMLD
- Are not currently delivering intensive interaction sessions
- Have not received full intensive interaction training up to module 2
If you choose to take part your setting will be randomly assigned to either receive the intensive interaction training straight away (Intervention Group), or a year later (Control Group). The team will organise for your setting to receive training. Following training, intervention group settings should deliver intensive interaction for 18 weeks, with the duration of each session directed by the interventionist in a way that is responsive to the child/young person’s needs - likely around 5-15 minutes. All participating settings will receive £350.
