Free Webinars Launch to Support Inclusive Democratic Education for Young People with SEND
Teachers and practitioners working with young people with SEND are being offered a free two-part webinar series this March aimed at making democracy and voting more accessible.
National Development Team for Inclusion, in partnership with the Electoral Commission, have developed the sessions to introduce a new suite of practical, co-produced resources designed to help educators facilitate impartial conversations about politics, democratic participation and voting. The materials include Easy Read guides, social stories, and videos featuring British Sign Language and captions.
The first part of the training focuses on the principles of inclusive democratic education, spotlighting the barriers disabled young people can face when engaging with political processes. Part two explores how to use the accessible resources in practice to build confidence when discussing voting and democracy in a SEND setting.
Each one hour webinar is offered on a range of dates to allow flexible attendance, and participants are asked to complete Part 1 before joining Part 2. The training is suitable for teachers, SENCOs, learning support staff, youth workers and any practitioner supporting young people with SEND. No prior experience in political or citizenship education is required.
