Rise in Exclusions and Suspensions Highlights Challenges for Learners with SEND
Recent analysis by FFT Education Datalab reveals a rise in exclusions and suspensions across all year groups during the 2023/24 academic year, with notable impacts on disadvantaged and learners with SEND.
Using attendance data from 10,000 schools, the study estimates an overall increase in exclusion rates compared to 2022/23, with Year 9 seeing a 12% rise.
Disadvantaged pupils are disproportionately affected, with nearly 19% in Years 9 and 10 suspended or excluded at least once. These findings emphasise the urgency of addressing inequalities, particularly for SEND learners, who often face heightened risks of exclusion.
The report underscores the need for proactive measures in schools to support vulnerable pupils, including inclusive practices and early intervention strategies.
The data offers valuable insights into trends affecting classroom dynamics and student wellbeing, underlining the importance of tailored support systems for at-risk groups.
