Banter or Bullying? A free online CPD course for staff
The Anti-Bullying Alliance has created a new course to support school staff to understand the difference between banter and bullying.
The new course will help staff to take a whole-school anti-bullying approach to preventing the misuse of banter, identifying bullying and harmful behaviours when they might be disguised as banter, and equip children and young people with the skills to navigate the line of acceptability between banter and intentional unkind behaviour.
The aims of the course are that staff understand:
- that banter should be playful, positive and reciprocal
- that aggressive behaviours, and even bullying, can sometimes be masked as ‘just banter’
- how to equip children and young people with skills to navigate the line of acceptability between banter and negative behaviours e.g. bullying
- how to embark on a whole-school approach to understanding banter and preventing its misuse
The course has been co-designed with Nottingham Trent University Psychology Department and adds to the e-learning suite of courses around tackling bullying.
