British Journal of Special Education is inviting applications for the role of Co-Editor-in-Chief

British Journal of Special Education (BJSE) is concerned with a wide range of special educational needs (SEN), and covers all levels of education: pre-school, school, and post-school. BJSE is widely read by nasen members as well as other practitioners, administrators, advisers, teacher educators, and researchers in the UK and overseas.

The journal publishes high quality empirical, and theoretical, articles from all national contexts. This includes all forms of research (qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods), "think-pieces" around contemporary debates and response articles dealing with research previously published in BJSE.

nasen and Wiley are excited to be seeking a Co-Editor-in-Chief to work alongside Incoming Editor-in-Chief Dr Tristan Middleton, University of Gloucestershire, UK. The successful applicant will work with the team to build on the journal's strong foundations and continue developing BJSE as a core community resource. There is an annual honorarium for the role.

The successful candidate for the Co-Editor-in-Chief role will have an international network of contacts and will also ideally have the following:

  • Broad and extensive knowledge in the field of special and inclusive education
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Experience in journal publishing and editorial decision making
  • Commitment to varied perspectives in the editorial process

The pace of change in academic publishing is accelerating, and to respond, the Editors-in-Chief need to work together, alongside the Publisher and Editorial Board in an effective way. On this basis, a flexible and collaborative approach will be essential for all successful applicants.

Job Description


The Editors-in-Chief will work closely with the Publisher to oversee the effective peer review of manuscripts and undertake initiatives for journal development. The role includes the screening of regular submissions and responsibility for peer review decisions. In addition, the Editors-in-Chief should be committed to journal development and editorial standards and will be responsible for implementing and managing core strategic initiatives alongside nasen and the Publisher.

The successful candidate will:

  • Embrace a flexible and collaborative approach, working closely with nasen and the Publisher and Editorial Office staff at Wiley.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring that the journal's editorial practices, including peer review process, policies, and workflows, promote inclusivity and reflect varied perspectives in the advancement of scholarly research.
