Post-lockdown attendance in education and early years settings

Covid-19

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic the government has been tracking attendance of pupils within schools, with a special focus on vulnerable pupils and those with an EHCP. The most recent figures released today show that whilst the percentage of pupils with an EHCP attending school (84%), as of Thursday 1st of October, is still lower than the overall percentage of pupils attending schools (90%), it is slightly higher than previous weeks (81%). The figure gives a snapshot of attendance on a specific day so does not provide detail regarding why pupils were absent. It does not for example consider typical absences that may be expected throughout the school year. Despite this, the figures indicate that a proportion of pupils with SEND are still not accessing ‘in-setting’ education post-lockdown, suggesting that there could still be barriers to attendance for these pupils.
