Twilight Talks Research Series: Using focus groups in education setting

Session delivered by Dr Leda Kamenopoulou from Institute of Education, UCL’s faculty for Education and Society

This session will introduce learners to focus groups as an effective method for collecting views from multiple stakeholders and it will provide an overview of focus group methodology. It will next provide some examples from the speaker’s experience of designing and running focus groups tailored to the needs of a range of participants, including children and young people with and without Special Educational Needs/Disabilities (SEN/D) and adults within education settings. The session will also offer practical guidance for maximising the quantity and quality of the data gathered using focus groups.

Intended learning outcomes
At the end of the session the learner will have:

  1. Understanding of the main characteristics of focus groups
  2. Understanding of the difference between a focus group and a group interview
  3. Ability to critically reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of focus groups
  4. Knowledge of the basics of focus group design (including the dos and the don’ts)
  5. Knowledge of strategies that help maximise quantity and quality of focus group data

Meet your trainer

Dr Leda Kamenopoulou

Dr Leda Kamenopoulou is an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology and Human Development, Institute of Education (IOE), UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, UK. Her teaching, research and publications focus on Multisensory Impairment (Deafblindness), inclusive education within different contexts, and preparing teaching professionals for meeting the needs of all learners. She has extensive experience of conducting qualitative and mixed methods research within a variety of education settings.
